In partnership with the Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, SHRM Portage County invites you to join W&H's October Meeting titled:
"Independent Contractors and 541 Exemptions"
ABOUT THE EVENT: This is part of our SHRM Portage County 2024 Wage and Hour Learning Series. We are partnering with the The Department of Labor Division of Wage and Hour to provide business owners and HR professionals an understanding of the 2024 changes in wage and hour laws impacting business.
About the Presentation: More than 143 million American workers are protected by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the federal law that establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and youth employment standards. Under the FLSA covered nonexempt workers are entitled to a minimum wage of not less than $7.25 for all hours worked and overtime pay at a rate not less than one and one-half times the regular rate of pay is required after 40 hours of work in a workweek. The FLSA also contains youth employment standards that are designed to protect the educational opportunities of minors and prohibit their employment in jobs and under conditions detrimental to their health or well-being.
In order to help employers stay in compliance with the FLSA, this presentation will provide an overview of the FLSA and recent updates for salary exempt professionals and employee or independent contractor classification.
About the Speaker: Danielle Calderon is the Community Outreach and Resource Planning Specialist (CORPS) for the Wage & Hour Division’s Ohio District Office. Danielle began her career in 2011 as a Wage Hour Investigator. Over the last decade she has acted as a subject matter expert on the laws enforced by the Wage & Hour Division, including: the Fair Labor Standards Act, Family Medical Leave Act, and the Davis Bacon and Related Acts. Danielle began working as the CORPS for the Ohio in 2022 and works to provide outreach and education to stakeholders throughout the state.
